Swinton Insurance was founded in the 1960’s in Salford and during the 1950’s it established itself as a leading insurer for motor cars. The business grew further in the 1970’s as Swinton launched the first ever television advertisement for car insurance. Due to the increased awareness through advertising Swinton’s share of the market for the North West of England grew rapidly.

Swinton embraced the age of technology and launched a computerized quotation system, adding a computerized customer record system also allowed further expansion through an ever increasing local branch system.

During the 1990’s Swinton became a subsidiary, wholly owned by what is now known as Royal Sun Alliance. The company opened a Telesales/Servicing Centre and developed a free phone quote line that enabled all local branches to the central call centre.

The early 21 st century saw he company bought by a French insurer – La Mutelle Du Mans Assurance (MMA) although Swinton trades independently in the UK. The company now owns Colonnade Insurance Brokers and so became Swinton Colonnade which makes it the biggest high street insurance broker.
